This
unique glass mural in the Children's Department of the Library
was commissioned by the Avon Lake Public Library Endowment Fund as
part of its mission to raise funds in support of the Library's
educational role in the community. Your tax-deductible contributions
to the Endowment Fund will be gratefully received and acknowledged.
As the morning sun strikes the eight large glass-carved panels
that comprise "An Enchanted Fairy Garden," the garden's
magical inhabitants seem to come to life.
Created by local artist/glass carver Nancy
Adler Kearns, the eight 3-foot
square glass panels depict an enchanting, whimsical world with
nymph-like fairy creatures
fluttering about a garden with larger-than-life foliage. In
Nancy's words, "Some of the butterfly-winged
creatures sit on huge, open magnolia flowers; another floats
by an iron gate in the stone wall at the entrance to the garden." The
panels sparkle as the sun shines through their crystal bevels.
Sponsors through their contributions may honor or commemorate family, friends or colleagues on a plaque displayed near the glass murals.
Artist
Nancy Adler Kearns and her family live in Avon Lake. Nancy has been an artist/glass-carver for 15 years, and her work is installed in many businesses and homes throughout Northeast Ohio.
The murals eight panels are thick laminated, safety glass. Nancy transfers her design onto a special adhesive sheet, affixed to the glass, which resists abrasion. She cuts out design elements on the adhesive, and carves the glass by abrasively etching it in different patterns and depths. This brings out a powerful third dimension that is enhanced by light. The panels are also embellished with crystal bevels and a crackled-glass technique.
Nancy Adler Kearns has made a substantial contribution to the Library by donating a significant portion of her time in creating this remarkable mural.
