the Reading Bug”

June 2 – July 26 Children ages Preschool through 5th Grade
Let the reading bug bite you this summer! Pick up your reading calendar
at the Children’s desk. After reading, or being read to, for at
least 30 minutes a day for 10 days, bring the calendar in and collect
a prize. With each prize, you’ll also be entered in a raffle drawing
for additional prizes the day of the Fun Fair. For further information,
contact the Children’s desk at 440.933.7527.
Storytimes
All Storytimes begin the week of Monday, June 9 and end on Wednesday,
July 16. There is NO REGISTRATION for Storytimes or Step-up Club. Numbered
tickets are available, beginning one-half hour before each scheduled
time. Tickets are picked up on a first-come-first-served basis each
week. You may only take tickets for your child (or children) and yourself.
Evening Family
Storytimes For the entire family – 30 minutes
Monday: 7:00 pm
Step-up Club 4 & 5 year olds not yet in Kindergarten – 30 minutes
Children on their own participate in exciting stories, music, crafts
(may be messy!), games & activities.
Wednesday: 10:00 a.m.

spiders, ladybugs and caterpillars are just waiting for you to find

Dr. Insecta has caught some reading bugs and he’s bringing his multi-legged insect friends to Avon Lake Public Library. He will introduce us to some of the coolest insects on the planet. The good doctor will have everything from multi-legged millipedes to hairy arachnids, hissing Madagasar cockroaches and READ-A, a talking ladybug! He will also perform a “Kid-to-Bug” Metamorphosis! Children, parents, families and neighbors are invited to the Friends of Avon Lake Public Library’s 1st Annual “Lemonade
for Our Library” lemonade stand competition and fundraiser. Groups are to set up their lemonade stands at home or in other approved public areas. Entry fee of $10 and all lemonade sale proceeds go directly to the Friends. Entry forms with detailed information and guidelines available at the Library. Prizes will be awarded. Child Care Connection Preschool Kits
Child Care Connection kits feature 50 popular preschool theme.
Each kit contains 5 books and a appropriate puppet or toy related
to the theme. Parents are encouraged to use the kits as well as
preschool teachers. The original grant was funded by the Gund Foundation.
Child Care Connection kits loan period is 21 days. Click

Puppet Kits
A picture book is accompanied with a puppet in a canvas bag for hours of entertainment. Loan period is 21 days. Funding for the puppets was provided by the Avon Lake Kiwanis Club.
Games
A variety of board games for preschool and school age children are available to played with in the library. Check out games at the Children's Reference Desk.
Computers
Children may sign up for computers featuring Edutainment and Educational CD-ROMS appropriate for all ages. Internet access (with signed parental permission card) and word processing are also available. Reservations may be made in person or by phone for a half hour time slot.
Secret Garden
The outdoor alcove adjacent to the Children's Room is the Secret Garden. Enter through the green trellis and you will find stone statues (Peter Rabbit, a frog and a cat), a bird house, and a bird bath among the plants and flowers.
Homework Center
When large groups of Avon Lake students are working on the same assignment, some books relating to the assignment will be changed to temporary reference and assigned to the Homework Center. All children will have access to the needed information to complete their assignments.
Scout Information
Check out Boy Scout Merit Badge books, as well as Cub Scout, Girl Scout and Brownie Leadership manuals.
Caldecott
Medal Books
The Caldecott Medal is awarded annually to the illustrator of the most distinguished American picture book for children.
Newbery
Award Books
The Newbery Medal honors the year's most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. The medal was established in 1922 and is presented annually by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA). The recipient must be a citizen or resident of the United States.
